5 Tips To Inspire Creativity in Your Home

Creativity ...

Described by Elizabeth Gilbert as, "constantly choosing the path of curiosity over the path of fear.” When it comes to our living space, the question for us to answer is, "how can I inspire openness and curiosity to create magic everyday?

I hope through these tips you find at least one thing that you can implement in your living space to inspire more creativity in your life.

Tip 1: Visualize Your Ideal Room

“When you intentionally use your everyday life to bring about positive change in the lives of others [and yourself], you begin to live a life that matters.”

John C. Maxwell

Do you look forward to spending time in the space you create in now? If the answer is no, let's change it!

I love the idea of intentionally living. While it is ever popular to "go with the flow" I invite you to take a moment, with your eyes closed, and visualize the type of space you think is ideal. A space that you would LOVE spending time in.

What layout do you have in mind? Where are the core pieces of furniture?

What type of furniture? Are they fabric or leather? are they saturated hues or neutrals?

Are there any small objects that you need to have in the space? Perhaps items with sentimental value?

What about the "free space" with nothing in it to balance the design?

I hope those questions help inspire your mind to journey through and discover your ideal space.

Tip 2: Establish an Inspirational Wall

"you can create an inspirational wall to help you stay focused on your dreams and goals. Include your favorite frames, wall art, quotes, wallpapers, pictures of your dream vacation spots, role models, a letter to your future self and more. Keep it as simple and inspiring as possible."

-Elizabeth Laiza King

My inspirational posters are also perfect items for a wall like this.

Keeping yourself focused and inspired is a KEY to creativity. I love Elizabeth's idea of writing a letter to your future self. Amazing.

Tip 3: En"light"en Your Space

Interior design experts often say that lighting is the number 1 overlooked component of a great room. Their recommendation is to actually have 3 separate light sources IN ADDITION TO your overhead light.

Be deliberate about the temperature of the light.

Most bulbs will advertise color temperature on the package.  This will tell you how warm or cool the color of the light is.

  • 2700K – 3000K – This is the warm or soft white range, best suited for areas in the home where you want to relax or entertain.
  • 3500K – 4500K – This is more a neutral white light range, giving a balance between warm and soft color light.
  • Over 5000K – Generally referred to as daylight and best suited for use in offices, workshops, bathrooms, or other areas where high detail visibility is important. It can also help energize you in the morning.

Tip 4: Invite Mother Nature in

Studies show time spent outside in green spaces can reduce our mental fatigue, increase our relaxation, and even improve our cognition.

The increase of oxygen that plants produce help to open up our minds and which is vital for creativity.

So my invitation is to add a little green! Try it out and see if the experts are right.

Tip 5: Music

Stimulate your brain with some tunes. Different people respond to different genres so have fun! Try out a variety of genres and see which types of music help stir up your creative juices.

Here's a guide in case you find it helpful:

  • Soothing music like Jazz helps us distress and has healing powers.
  • Upbeat music releases endorphins and which makes us happy and increases our immune.
  • Pop music boosts energy and helps us exercise better.
  • Rhythmic drumming helps in meditation.
  • Classical music helps in memory recall and also deters crime.
  • Metal is good for our sense of self and gives a strong sense of identity.
  • Rap music can help fight against depression.
  • Country music evokes feelings of internal joy.
